As athletes, we all understand the importance of proper nutrition. Eating the right foods can help us reach peak performance levels, provide us with the energy and nutrients needed for our bodies to function and recover, and give us the fuel we need to stay ahead of the competition. But with all the various information out there on nutrition, what exactly should an athlete be focusing on?
First and foremost, a balanced diet is essential for athletes. This means consuming protein, carbohydrates, healthy fats and essential vitamins and minerals from a wide variety of foods and beverages. Eating lean proteins such as lean pork, poultry, fish, and eggs provide our bodies with the building blocks for muscle tissue, and are great for performance. Eating complex carbohydrates like whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and legumes sustain our energy and help our cells replenish and repair. Healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds provide important omega-3 fatty acids that help reduce inflammation and aid our cognitive function.
Second, adequate hydration is a must for athletes. Water helps us regulate body temperature and aids in digestion and nutrient absorption. Make sure to drink plenty of water before, during and after physical activity to stay hydrated. While sports drinks or other electrolyte beverages may be beneficial during endurance activities, they are not necessary during shorter, moderate activities.
Finally, consider timing. Eating meals or snacks within the two to three hours prior to a work out will make sure your body has enough fuel sources to sustain your performance. Eating a snack with complex carbohydrates and a lean source of protein within two hours post workout will help replenish your energy stores and aid in recovery.
In conclusion, nutrition can make or break a serious athlete. Understanding the basics of proper nutrition, like the messages mentioned above, are vital for success. Eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water, and timing meals and snacks correctly based on your activity level will help keep you at the top of your game.
